It All Started with Joel: Get to Know Our CEO
After graduating high school, my family thought it a good idea for me to move to Reno, NV, where I had extended family and potential for working in the field of construction. Having just graduated, I decided that Reno was a good place to see what life held in store, so I took the leap and landed in the Biggest Little City.
Getting into the field of construction is not always simple. It took a while to land a full-time job, so I first worked as an apprentice at a sheet metal company cutting metal for different projects. A few months later, having been accepted to the carpenters union, I took a job as an apprentice carpenter, which I worked for several years.
On many construction sites, I experienced some of the tougher decisions that occur in construction. I saw first hand the repercussions of not having the right information on a job, and how it impacted all of the work occurring on the site. Noting that the work didn’t always run smoothly and delays inevitably happened, I wanted to do more for the field of construction than work in it.
Realizing that to be more effective in the field meant doing more with design and building, I decided to expand my career and apply to university. I was accepted to UNR in the engineering program. During university, I met my wife, and we were married and started a family.
After receiving my BS in Engineering with an emphasis in structural engineering, I went directly into the MS program in Engineering, continuing with the structural emphasis. Having spent time in the field of construction, my goal was to find a way to have the most impact when developing construction documents, which are the mainstay of helping contractors in the field obtain the necessary materials in correct amounts, saving time and helping to alleviate extra expenses.
After passing the engineering exam and having several years of work experience in engineering firms between Nevada and California, I noticed something surprising where creating construction documentation was concerned.
BIM, Building Information Modeling, software wasn’t as widely used as the application really should be. BIM was created to provide multiple levels of information, including how much product is needed to build a structure.
The software makes designing and engineering extremely efficient. Any changes or modifications to a structure are immediately calculated, which makes the end documentation that much more reliable.
I thought it was revolutionary and fit my goal of creating construction documentation to be more efficient. So, I opened Sierra BIM Solutions, where contractors and individuals alike could access design and engineering services–obtaining construction documents, which actually could save time and money for the client and the contractor.
