Bearing Wall Letters Structural Engineering & Design Services
Sierra BIM Solutions: Contractors are NOT Engineers, We Are:
Renovations, remodeling, and additions all have one thing in common: a professional engineer to review and assess the room, home, or building to be changed so the general contractor can execute a residential or commercial space project.
Professional Engineers determine a building’s load-bearing walls. Load-bearing walls carry the weight of the roof, connecting the ceiling to the floor via joists and trusses, so the walls don’t crumble under the weight of the roof and the floor doesn’t collapse from the weight of the walls.
When you’re the owner of a home or commercial building and you’d like to change a room or remodel, renovate a bathroom, take it down to the studs, or build an addition to a structure, like adding a garage to your home, a professional engineer must be contacted to assess the structure for a load-bearing wall or walls.
The written analysis of a structure for load-bearing walls is known as a Bearing Wall Letter
The Role of a Bearing Wall Letter
Construction cannot begin on a project without a visual assessment to determine if a wall or walls is bearing or non-bearing.
Why? Contractors need to know where to provide support when demoing and reconstructing a space.
For a contractor to know what they can and can’t demo, change, and replace, they rely on professional engineers like Sierra BIM Solutions, who specialize in structural changes, to provide a detailed analysis of what is load bearing and not load bearing–otherwise known as the Bearing Wall Letter.
Thus, professional engineers connect the vision of the owner with the expertise of a contractor, bringing to fruition the owner’s vision for the project designed and engineered by Sierra BIM Solutions.
When Do You Need a Bearing Wall Letter?
A bearing wall letter is required in various situations, including:
- Home Renovations Are you planning to remove or modify a wall in your home? Before permits or demolition begins, an engineer must complete a Bearing Wall Letter. Should a load-bearing wall be removed, structural failure may occur because the walls and roof do not have proper support.
- Commercial Remodeling In commercial buildings, bearing wall evaluations ensure that renovations or layout changes are aligned with the structure’s support system.
- Structural Repairs When addressing structural damage or repair, a Bearing Wall Letter confirms the role of the damaged wall and informs the repair strategy.
What We Do
The Bearing Wall Letter Process
Sierra BIM Solutions follows our four-step streamlined process to issue bearing wall letters quickly and efficiently while maintaining the highest standards of accuracy.
-
Complimentary Initial Consultation
Contact Us to Schedule
If you need to determine whether a wall or walls is a load bearing wall, please contact us. We will send a proposal to you that will need to be signed. We will also need an initial deposit to schedule the assessment.
-
Schedule a Time and Date
Once we’ve received the signed proposal and initial payment, we will schedule a time and date to assess the wall or walls in question.
-
The Site Visit
Arriving at your property, please be prepared for us to enter your attic space, the crawl space under the home if there is one, and the exterior. Essentially, we will check the entire structure to make the assessment. We use a variety of tools to complete the visual assessment: LIDAR scanning, engineering judgment, as well as existing drawings and calculations.
-
Timeline & Delivery
Once the assessment has been completed, we begin the process of developing the Bearing Wall Letter. Please allow one to two weeks to receive the final assessment. If you would like to expedite the process, we can do so for an additional fee.
Load-Bearing Wall vs. Non-Load-Bearing Wall
Understanding the difference between load-bearing and non-load-bearing walls is critical in any structural project. Load-bearing walls support the weight of the building, such as floors or roofs, and distribute that weight down to the foundation.
Non-load-bearing walls, on the other hand, are used to divide spaces and do not carry significant weight. Removing or altering load-bearing walls without professional advice can lead to catastrophic failure, such as roof collapse or foundation shifts.
Sierra BIM Solutions’s structural engineers provide load-bearing wall evaluations to help clients make informed decisions about wall modifications, ensuring that any structural changes maintain the integrity of the building.
Why Work With a Professional Structural Engineer for Bearing Wall Letters?
Attempting to remove or modify a wall without consulting a professional engineer can lead to significant safety risks. By working with Sierra BIM Solutions, you ensure that every structural change is handled with the utmost care.
Here’s why hiring a professional structural engineer is vital:
- Safety First: Engineers conduct thorough analyses to confirm that any modifications will not compromise the building’s safety.
- Accurate Load Calculations: Sierra BIM Solutions’s engineers use advanced tools to accurately assess the load distribution in a building.
- Legal Compliance: Avoid permitting issues and project delays by hiring a professional engineer, who will design and engineer your project, so it complies with local and state building codes.

Frequently Asked Questions
A bearing wall letter is a document provided by a structural engineer that verifies whether a wall is load-bearing or non-load-bearing. It’s crucial when planning to remove or modify walls, as it ensures that any changes won’t compromise the building’s structural integrity.
You need a Bearing Wall Letter when planning home renovations, such as removing or relocating a wall, especially if they are load-bearing. It’s also essential during commercial remodeling projects and when addressing structural repairs.
Sierra BIM Solutions conducts an on-site inspection to evaluate the building’s structural layout, including wall positioning, load distribution, and construction materials. Based on this analysis, we determine whether a wall is load-bearing and provide a letter outlining our findings.
Yes, but if the wall is load-bearing, the letter will include recommendations for reinforcements, such as beams or columns, to ensure the building’s stability. It’s essential to follow our engineer’s recommendations to avoid structural damage.
The process typically takes one to two weeks, depending on the complexity of the building and the scope of the inspection. After the on-site visit, Sierra BIM Solutions will prepare and deliver the letter with our findings.
